Jump Start

A jump start gets a bike with a flat battery running by connecting it to another battery or a portable booster.

A jump start means starting a motorcycle whose battery is too weak to turn the engine by temporarily connecting it to an external power source: another 12 V battery, a portable lithium jump starter or, with care, a car.

Connect red to the flat battery's positive terminal, then to the donor's positive. Connect black to the donor's negative and finally to a bare metal ground point on the dead bike, away from the battery. Remove the cables in reverse order once the engine runs.

When using a car as donor, keep the car engine off, as a car alternator can overload a small bike's electrics. A battery that keeps going flat should be tested, charged with a proper charger or replaced; also check the charging system.
