DC (Direct Current)

Direct current flows in one direction only; a motorcycle's battery and electrical system run on 12 V DC, while the alternator makes AC that is rectified.

Direct current (DC) flows steadily in one direction, from the positive to the negative side of the circuit. Batteries store and deliver DC, and almost all motorcycle, ATV and scooter systems are 12 V DC (some small or older bikes use 6 V).

The bike's alternator (stator) actually produces alternating current. A regulator/rectifier converts it to DC and limits the voltage to charge the battery and power lights and electronics.

When adding accessories such as heated grips or USB sockets, use a fused supply from the battery side and check polarity – reversing positive and negative can destroy electronics instantly.
