Freestyle Motocross (FMX)

Freestyle motocross is a judged discipline where riders perform tricks in the air off big ramps; scores reward difficulty, style and variety.

Freestyle motocross, or FMX, is a motorcycle sport in which riders launch off ramps and dirt jumps and perform aerial tricks – from whips and no-handers to backflips. Unlike racing, it is not decided by speed: judges score each run on difficulty, execution, variety and use of the course within a time limit.

FMX bikes are modified motocross bikes with grab holes in the seat and bodywork, higher or different handlebars and stiffened suspension for big landings. Competitions include X Games-style contests and, in Europe, events such as Night of the Jumps, which is sanctioned by the FIM.

Learning tricks starts on a foam pit or airbag landing with an experienced coach – never try them for the first time on a hard landing.
