Air Spring (Air Fork / Air Shock)

An air spring uses compressed air instead of a steel coil to hold up the bike. Common in modern motocross forks; set with a pump.

An air spring uses a chamber of compressed air to support the motorcycle instead of, or in addition to, a steel coil spring. You adjust spring rate by changing air pressure with a dedicated shock pump, so no spring swap is needed for riders of different weights.

Air forks are widely used on modern motocross bikes and some enduro and touring models because they save weight. An air spring is naturally progressive: it gets stiffer towards the end of travel, which helps resist bottoming out.

Check pressure regularly, preferably cold and with the bike on a stand, as small leaks or temperature changes affect the setting. Air seals need periodic servicing. Many riders find coil springs feel more consistent, especially in long, rough enduro sections.
