Harshness (Suspension)

Harshness is a jarring, uncomfortable feel from the suspension when it fails to absorb sharp bumps smoothly.

Harshness describes suspension that transmits sharp bumps through to the rider instead of absorbing them. The bike feels jarring over ripples, braking bumps and roots, and the wheels can skip instead of following the ground.

Common causes are too much compression damping, springs too stiff for the rider's weight, too little sag, excess oil in the forks, worn bushings or dirty, sticky seals that add friction. Very high tyre pressure can also feel harsh.

Start by setting sag correctly and then soften compression damping a few clicks at a time, testing on the same section. If the problem remains, the suspension may need servicing or springs matched to your weight.
