Monoshock

A monoshock is a rear suspension layout with a single shock absorber instead of a pair, often working through a linkage.

A monoshock rear suspension uses one central shock absorber between the frame and the swingarm, instead of the twin shocks found on classic and many custom bikes. Yamaha popularised it in motocross in the 1970s; today almost every sports, off-road and adventure bike uses it.

The shock may be mounted directly to the swingarm or through a linkage (rocker and pull rods) that gives a progressive rate: soft over small bumps, firmer deep in the stroke. KTM's PDS system is a well-known linkless design.

Benefits include lower unsprung weight, easier adjustment of preload and damping in one place and more room for longer travel. Service the shock and grease the linkage bearings regularly, especially on off-road bikes that see mud and pressure washing.
