These piston rings have an optimal shape and a long service life. These parts are very thin and fragile. They are made from a high-quality elastic steel spring, then cut into washers that form the rings. They are generally asymmetrical: pay close attention to the installation direction when assembling the engine.
The gap between the two ends of the ring when it is inserted into the cylinder is called the ring end gap. Measuring it makes it possible to assess ring wear.

Piston rings seal the piston inside the cylinder. The ring set also helps cool the piston crown by transferring heat to the cooled liner. It spreads a thin film of oil inside the cylinder to limit wear. Finally, it prevents oil from rising to the top of the cylinder. The rings' outer diameter at rest is slightly larger than that of the cylinder.

Generally, 3 rings are located at the top of the piston:

• the top compression ring, closest to the combustion chamber, allows combustion to achieve maximum piston thrust. As its name suggests, it stops hot gases and reduces the temperature of the piston wall beneath it;
• the sealing ring, also called the compression ring, provides additional sealing for gases that may pass through the top compression ring. It looks almost the same as the top compression ring;
• the oil scraper ring: scrapes the oil present on the cylinder beneath the piston to prevent it from being burned. This oil is constantly sprayed onto the cylinder and piston to cool it.
