These rings have an optimal shape and a long service life. These parts are very thin and fragile. They are made from a high-quality elastic steel spring, which is then cut into washers forming the rings. They are generally asymmetrical, so attention must be paid to the installation direction when assembling the engine.
The space between the two ends of the ring when it is inserted into the cylinder is called the ring end gap. Measuring it makes it possible to assess ring wear.

Piston rings ensure the piston is sealed inside the cylinder. The ring pack also helps cool the piston crown by transferring heat to the cooled cylinder liner. It also spreads a thin film of oil inside the cylinder to limit wear. Finally, it prevents oil from rising to the top of the cylinder. The outside diameter of the rings at rest is slightly larger than that of the cylinder.

Generally, 3 rings are located at the top of the piston:

• the top compression ring, which is closest to the combustion chamber, allows combustion to provide maximum piston thrust. As its name indicates, it stops the hot gases and reduces the temperature of the piston wall beneath it;
• the sealing ring, also called the compression ring, provides additional sealing for gases that may pass through the top ring. It looks almost the same as the top compression ring;
• the oil scraper ring removes the oil present on the cylinder below the piston to prevent it from burning. This oil is constantly sprayed onto the cylinder and piston to cool it.
