To prolong the life of the engine and avoid expensive repair bills, the piston should be replaced either when the power starts to drop off or when the engine begins to “knock”. This is generally every 5–10,000 km (approximately every 3–6,000 miles). Simply replace the old piston with the new one and everything will be good again. It is advisable to order a new gasket set and small-end bearings when changing the piston.
