Throttle control (throttle modulation)

Throttle control is opening and closing the throttle smoothly and precisely to manage power, grip and the bike's balance.

Throttle control, or throttle modulation, is the skill of dosing power with fine, deliberate movements of the twist grip. Smooth inputs keep the suspension settled and the rear tyre within its grip, while abrupt on-off movements unsettle the chassis and can break traction.

On the road, a gentle, steadily rising throttle through a corner keeps the bike stable after the turn-in. Off-road, careful throttle use with a little clutch lets you climb slippery roots and rocks without spinning the rear wheel, while a sharper blip can lift the front over an obstacle.

Practise in a safe area: ride slowly in a straight line and in circles holding exactly steady revs, then add small, precise changes. Electronic aids help, but do not replace a good right hand.
