Shovelhead is the nickname of the Harley-Davidson Big Twin engine produced from 1966 to 1984. It replaced the Panhead and was followed by the Evolution engine. The name comes from the rocker covers, which look like upturned coal shovels.

Shovelheads are air-cooled, pushrod 45° V-twins, originally about 1200 cc, with an 80 cubic inch (around 1340 cc) version from 1978. They are known for character and sound, but also for oil leaks, heat and the need for regular attention.

Today they are popular with restorers and custom builders. Many have been rebuilt with modern ignition, oil pumps and carburettors to improve reliability.
