Calipers (Measuring Tool)

Measuring calipers (a vernier or digital caliper) measure outside, inside and depth dimensions of parts, typically to 0.02–0.01 mm.

Calipers in the workshop sense are a measuring tool, not a brake part. The most common type is the sliding vernier or digital caliper, which measures outside dimensions with its main jaws, inside dimensions with the small upper jaws and depth with the rod that slides out of the end.

On a motorcycle they are handy for checking brake disc and pad thickness, fork tube and spacer sizes, bolt lengths, spring free length or the diameter of a part you need to order. A good digital caliper usually reads to 0.01 mm, but its real accuracy is a little lower.

For critical engine work such as piston, bore or shaft wear, use a micrometer or bore gauge instead. Keep the jaws clean, zero the tool before measuring and don't overtighten it on the part.
