Dipstick (Oil Level Check)

A dipstick is a rod or dipstick plug used to check engine oil level; some bikes use a sight glass instead. Check with the bike upright.

A dipstick is a metal or plastic rod, often built into the oil filler cap, that reaches into the sump or oil tank. The oil film on it shows whether the level is between the minimum and maximum marks. Many motorcycles use a small sight glass on the engine case instead.

  • Follow your manual: some bikes are checked with the cap screwed in, others with it just resting in the hole.
  • Hold the bike upright, not on the side stand, unless the manual says otherwise.
  • Dry-sump bikes are often checked warm, right after the engine has run.

Top up with the correct oil grade a little at a time; overfilling can cause leaks and oil in the airbox.
