Hardtail

A hardtail is a motorcycle frame with no rear suspension; the rear wheel is fixed rigidly to the frame.

A hardtail is a frame without rear suspension: the rear axle is mounted directly to the frame, so only the tyre and seat absorb bumps from behind. Almost all motorcycles were built this way until rear suspension became common after the Second World War.

Today hardtails are mainly seen on custom bikes, bobbers and choppers, where the clean, low look is valued more than comfort. Some modern cruisers imitate the look with a hidden shock under the seat, often called a softail-style frame.

Riding a true hardtail on rough roads is tiring and puts more load on the frame, wheels and rider's back. A sprung seat and correct tyre pressure help comfort.
