Upshift

An upshift is changing to a higher gear; on most motorcycles you lift the gear lever, briefly easing the throttle or using the clutch or a quickshifter.

An upshift means changing into a higher gear, which lowers engine revs for the same road speed. On most motorcycles you lift the gear lever with your left toe; the usual pattern is first gear down, neutral half a step up, then second to sixth gear upwards.

For a smooth upshift, roll off the throttle slightly, pull the clutch briefly, lift the lever firmly and release the clutch while opening the throttle again. Experienced riders often make clutchless upshifts by preloading the lever and briefly closing the throttle. A quickshifter does this electronically by cutting ignition or fuel for a fraction of a second.

Shift at the revs that suit the situation: lower for economy and comfort, higher for strong acceleration, but never into the red zone.
