Torque

Torque is the twisting force an engine produces, measured in newton-metres (Nm); together with rpm it determines power.

Torque is a turning force: force multiplied by the distance from the centre of rotation, measured in newton-metres (Nm). In an engine, combustion pushes the piston down and the connecting rod turns this into torque on the crankshaft.

Power is torque multiplied by engine speed. An engine with strong torque at low revs pulls hard from slow speeds without shifting down, which suits touring, trail and enduro riding. High peak power usually comes from revving higher, as on sports bikes.

When comparing bikes, look at the whole torque curve, not just the peak figure: a broad, flat curve makes a bike easier to ride. The same word also describes the tightening force on bolts, set with a torque wrench.
