Running out of tyre (tyre edge)

Running out of tyre means leaning beyond the tread edge so the sidewall touches the road and grip suddenly disappears.

Running out of tyre (or 'running out of rubber') happens when a bike is leaned so far that the tread edge is used up and the rounded shoulder or sidewall starts to touch the road. Grip drops sharply and the result is usually a low-side crash. The term rollover is sometimes used for the sidewall rolling onto the road surface in this situation.

On most road bikes, footpegs, stands or exhausts touch down first, which is a warning that you are near the limit. Track bikes with raised rearsets and sticky tyres can reach the real edge of the tyre.

Unused 'chicken strips' at the tyre edge are not a problem. Do not chase full tyre width on public roads, and keep correct tyre pressure, as low pressure lets the sidewall deform.
