Powertrain (drivetrain)

The powertrain is everything that makes and delivers drive: engine, primary drive, clutch, gearbox and final drive to the rear wheel.

The powertrain covers all components that create power and deliver it to the driven wheel. On a motorcycle that means the engine, the primary drive from crankshaft to clutch, the clutch, the gearbox and the final drive by chain, belt or shaft. The term drivetrain is often used for the parts after the engine.

On electric motorcycles the powertrain is the battery, motor controller, motor and usually a single reduction stage with belt or chain. On ATVs it may include a CVT, differentials and four-wheel drive.

Wear in one part affects the others: a stretched chain wears sprockets and gearbox output bearings, and a slipping clutch hides engine performance. Regular checks of oil, chain slack and clutch play keep the whole powertrain healthy.
