Master link (chain joining link)

A master link is a removable chain link used to join a drive chain; it comes as a clip-type or rivet-type link.

A master link (connecting link) lets you open and close a drive chain without a full chain press. There are two common types: the clip type, whose side plate is held by a spring clip, and the rivet type, whose pins are peened over with a chain tool.

Clip links are handy on off-road and small bikes. Fit the clip with its closed end facing the direction of chain travel so it cannot be knocked off. Many manufacturers recommend rivet links on powerful road bikes because they are stronger.

Always use a master link of the same size and type as the chain (for example 520 or 525, O-ring or X-ring) and fit the supplied seals. Never reuse an old clip or a riveted link.
