These rings have an optimal shape and a long service life. These parts are very thin and fragile. They are made from a high-quality elastic steel spring, then cut into washers that form the rings. They are generally asymmetrical: pay attention to the installation direction when assembling the engine.

The space between the two ends of the ring when it is inserted into the cylinder is called the ring end gap. Measuring it helps assess ring wear.

The rings ensure the piston is sealed in the cylinder. The ring set also helps cool the piston crown by transferring heat to the cooled liner. It spreads a thin film of oil inside the cylinder to limit wear. Finally, it prevents oil from rising to the top of the cylinder.

The outer diameter of the rings at rest is slightly larger than that of the cylinder.

Generally, 3 rings are located at the top of the piston:

• the top compression ring, which is closest to the combustion chamber, allows combustion to produce maximum piston thrust. As its name suggests, it stops hot gases and reduces the temperature of the piston wall beneath it;
• the sealing ring, also called the compression ring, provides additional sealing for gases that may pass through the top ring. It has almost the same appearance as the top compression ring;
• the oil scraper ring: scrapes oil from the cylinder beneath the piston to prevent it from burning. This oil is constantly sprayed onto the cylinder and piston to cool it.
