These piston rings have an optimal shape and a long service life. These parts are very thin and fragile; they are made from a high-quality elastic steel spring, then cut into rings forming the piston rings. They are generally asymmetrical: pay attention to the installation direction when assembling the engine.

The space between the two ends of the ring when it is inserted into the cylinder is called the ring end gap. Measuring it makes it possible to assess ring wear.

Piston rings ensure the seal between the piston and the cylinder. The rings also help cool the piston crown by transferring heat to the cooled cylinder liner. They spread a thin film of oil in the cylinder to limit wear. Finally, they prevent oil from rising to the top of the cylinder.

The outer diameter of the piston rings at rest is slightly larger than that of the cylinder.

Generally, 3 rings are located at the top of the piston:

• the top compression ring, which is closest to the combustion chamber, allows combustion to provide maximum force to the piston. As its name indicates, it stops the hot gases and reduces the temperature of the piston wall beneath it;
• the second compression ring, also called the sealing ring, provides additional sealing for gases that may pass through the top ring. It looks almost the same as the top ring;
• the oil scraper ring: it scrapes the oil present on the cylinder beneath the piston to prevent it from being burned. This oil is constantly sprayed onto the cylinder and piston to cool it.
