Reed valves control the exchange process in the inlet area, opening during intake and closing during pre-compression in the crankcase. How quickly this process occurs significantly affects the engine's throttle response.
As standard, most blocks are sluggish or even fitted with steel plates. This has 2 disadvantages: 1) the engine is less responsive, and 2) steel plates can cause severe engine damage when they break up, whereas carbon reeds are simply expelled through the exhaust.
